Lost in the hubbub of Monday's embarrassing 30-3 preseason
loss to Tennessee was the signing of the best Rams WR ever,
You want proof that he was the best?
Well, look at 1995, the first year in St. Louis. He had 119
catches for 1,781 yards and was the ONLY real weapon on that
team. He also played very well on special teams that year.
1996, 84 catches for 1,338 yards with a young, inconsistent
Tony Banks and others.
Then, there is 1997 and 1998. Lost years full of injuries
and doubt. There are still some highlights from 98, as in
1998 when he outproduced Cris Carter, Randy Moss and Jake
Reed combined in a thrilling, heartbreaking loss, 38-31 to
Minnesota. There was the 10 catch/233 yard game against
Ike took a lot of abuse for the injury (I, for one, was
upset with him and doubted him).
Then, 1999. WOW. He was healthy, he finally had a solid,
solid QB, other threats at WR and RB.
Ike never complained about "only" getting 77 catches in 99.
He knew this team was loaded and that he had 119 catches in
a season, as he did on the '95 team that went 7-9, so who
cares about personal records?
He was a leader who remembered the final days in '94 in LA,
and always said after a win they had more to do----even in
'99. The younger players could look up to him for his words,
when spoken, and his actions on the field or practicing.
How about 4 TOUCHDOWNS against SF, three in ten minutes of
the first quarter to help break a 17 game losing streak. How
about being so happy and elated they finally beat the
Whiners, he was overcome and cried, not for show, but
because he cared deeply. And this from a guy a lot doubted
for two years because he "might" not care.
Or how about starting the playoffs off with a BOMB to set up
the rout over Minnesota? He was contained against Tampa, but
that was one of the best defensive efforts ever.
You want a clutch player? How about catching the game
winning touchdown in the Super Bowl? There WILL NOT be a
more clutch catch ever in the sport again in that setting I
By the time Ike leaves the Rams, he will hold every
receiving record, beating out the likes of Elroy Hirsch,
Henry Ellard and Tom Fears.
Ike saw the money they were offering and instead of causing
a commotion, he took a very fair offer and knows he is set
for life. Why try and squeeze more?
So, let's give him his props he deserves.
I know he is my all-time favorite player.....
