Brief History of The South African Association for Jazz Education
Cathy and Darius Brubeck met Richard Dunscomb in Montreux in 1987 and from then on became determined to have a connection with IAJE. At that time, the University of Natal offered the only degree in Jazz Studies in South Africa and students were recruited from all over the country. Now as well as the University of Cape Town, Pretoria Technikon, Natal Technikon and Rhodes University, there are a number of privately run academies and state high schools offering jazz courses.
The founding conference of SAJE as a fully constituted chapter of the International Association of Jazz Educators took place at the University of Witwatersrand in 1992 with the then President of the IAJE (Dennis Tini) in attendance. Subsequently, conferences were held at the University of Natal, Durban (1994), University of Cape Town (1996), Rhodes University, Grahamstown (1998), University of Natal, Durban (2000), Pretoria Technikon (2002), University of Cape Town (2004) & University of KwaZulu-Natal (2006).

The Association of All Wheel Drive Clubs of Southern Africa (AAWDC) was established in 1996 after having its first inaugural meeting as far back as 1993. The Association was formed under the guidance and efforts of the three major four-wheel drive clubs in South Africa, namely the Four Wheel Drive Club of Southern Africa, the SA Jeep Club (now the 4x4 ATV Club) and the Land Rover Owners Club of Southern Africa. The membership of the Association has grown since its inception and member clubs are spread over all the provinces or regions of South Africa and Swaziland.

Polo was introduced to South Africa by British cavalry regiments garrisoned in the Eastern Cape area of South Africa in the late 19th century. The first recorded tournament took place at King Williamstown in 1885. The British troops had, in turn, learnt the game in India not very long before this.
There is a mistaken impression that polo started with British royalty whereas in fact its origins lie somewhere in Persia or China. The word "polo" comes from the Gugerati word "pulu" meaning "ball" and there are tapestries depicting the sport dating back to the fourth century. The game swept across the Asian continent and it is a well known fact that the cruel Mongol leader, Genghis Khan, took to it with alacrity - even using enemies' heads as practice balls!

The Museums Association UK with the support of the Carnegie Trust undertook a survey of the status of commonwealth museums in Africa in 1932. In their report of South Africa the Carnegie Commissioners noted that some excellent museums existed but that they were isolated and would benefit from the creation of a museums association as well as a publication dealing with curatorial practice in the sub tropics.
Directly a standing committee of state-aided institutions was formed which saw the need for museum cooperation. Their first attempt to hold a meeting of museum representatives failed but a second was prompted by the Union government with sponsorship from the Carnegie Trust. So it was that 22 delegates representing 19 institutions in Southern Africa met in Kimberley on 23 rd April 1936.

The South African Football Association was founded on 8 December, 1991, the culmination of a long unity process that was to rid the sport in South Africa of all its past racial division.
Four disparate units came together to form the organisation in Johannesburg to set South African soccer on the road to a return to international competition after a lifetime of apartheid in soccer.
They were the Football Association of South Africa, the South African Soccer Association, the South African Soccer Federation and the South African National Football Association, who later withdrew from the process only to return again two years later.
It was only natural that the game finally be united as the sport of soccer had long led the way into breaking the tight grip of racial oppression, written into South Africa’s laws by its successive apartheid governments.
A delegation of the SAFA received a standing ovation at the congress of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) in Dakar, Senegal a month later, where South Africa were accorded observer status. South Africa’s membership of the world governing body FIFA was confirmed at their congress in Zurich in June, 1992.

The South African Power Flying Association is an independent association affiliated to the Aero Club of South Africa formed in the 1980's. The Aero Club was formed in 1920 by a group of airman, "Millers Boys", who had served with the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service. In 1928, due to lack of funds, the club went into recess. It was revived again in 1936 when Mr I W Schlesinger offered £10.000.00 in prize money for the promotion of an air race from England to Johannesburg. See theLondon to Cape Townpage for further details.
