For old IMGs with PhD, my story...
Several years after left medical school, I went to another country to study
for my PhD. Then I came to US and joined one top medical school for
postdoctoral research. I got 8 publications. Realized the toughness to work
as a faculty in academia, or instability as a scientist in biotech, I
decided to come to the USMLE world. I quited my research fellow position
after received green card and studied full time. Due to various reasons, I
could not get great scores in my steps, but I managed to pass step1/2/3 with
scores between 80 and 85. I had trouble in my CS test, but was able to pass
with my 3rd attempt. Did observership at one university hospital.
I applied over 240 programs, in IM, FM and pathology. By the end of October,
got only one IV in IM. In November and December, I tried to call programs
that did respond me through ERAS. Some PCs answered my call, most said they
had finished inviting interviewees, a few said they were still reviewing
applications. Second day entering 2009, I called one PC and she asked my
credentials, then told me to come for IV in 5 days. So, I had 2 IVs overall.
Today, at 11:50, I got email from NRMP. Thinking I was sure to get a "Sorry,
you did match to any program", to my surprise, I received a congratulations
!!! I could not believe it before NRMP was vailable after 12:00. Feel like I
hit a Jackpot.
As an old IMG out of medical school for 19 years, my experiences are:
Pass steps with first attempt (almost all of you can);
Pass step3 is a big help;
Get some USCE;
Do research to find out programs that have no year limit, not require hand-
NEVER, NEVER, NEVER give up. Try hard to contact PC even if they have not
Finally, if you try it, you will have chance!
