NIH in Bethesda, MD, is a very good place to do partime observationship (
usually they allow you to touch patients under supervision) for free, if you
email and contact attendings there. They are very nice people there.
Also in DC, you can apply for free externship for 3 months at Providence
Hospital, but it has to be full time for 3 months. You mail them the same
stuff you need for ERAS application, including 3 LORs.
In Baltimore, Union Memorial Hospital IM allows observationship.
In most VA hospitals, you can do observationship.
In University of Conneticutt, you can do observationship, but it is pure
shadowing, no chance to touch patients.
I like to go into the hospital and attend their grand rounds, to start
meeting people, to build connections.
Also try to have lunch in hospital cafeteria and talk to everyone you meet
to see if anyone can direct you.
Just remember it does not hurt to chat with strangers. I met some of my
clinical mentors through random chatting.
Just wear a tie and go into hospital with your confidence, and talk with
anyone that wears a white coat, and ask if you could listen to their
Someone will help you, if you are not too shy. This is a land full of people
who are willing to help you, if you are eager to learn and easy to work
