Mayo clinic interview impression

In general, very IMG friendly. Quite a few Indian residents and a few from
other European countries. I met a lot of Indian applicants during my
interview, too. Very nice people and friendly. Reasonable workload and good
on-call schedule. They don’t have overnight call in the first year. Strong
in C-L psychiatry, but maybe a little weak in acute adult psychiatry. (I
assume it because Rochester is not a big city and unlike other specialties
in Mayo Clinic, psychiatric patients may not fly in for treatment. )

They will provide you two or three nights of hotel stay depending if you
want to stay for the bonus day. In the bonus day, you just go for more
events or activities. There is really not much interview going on.

In the formal interview day, they do the downtown Mayo Clinic tour first.
Those buildings look great and the gym is fantastic and I think the cost is
quite affordable. Then we went to another site, which is major site for
psychiatry rotation. We could choose one subspecialty unit to go round with
the team. I chose acute psychosis unit because I think that is the hard core
of psychiatry. Others chose child, addition or C/L.

Then they start the interview in the afternoon after lunch. My flight was
delayed and I did not have a good night sleep. That was really a bad timing
for me. I totally had 4 interviewers: PD, the chair, a research faculty and a clinical faculty.

Interview with PD went O.K. She asked me why I want to pursue Ph.D., and how
a Ph.D. degree could help clinics. Once she got that answer from me, she
seemed happy. Then others were just common questions: your career goal,
family relocation etc. Then the meeting with the research faculty asked: why
did not I apply for neurology or ophthalmology residency since my Ph.D. and
postdoctoral work were more related with these two field; he also asked
about one of my research in China, and which factor I would change if I have
the chance to start it over? Then he asked me where else I will interview
at. I guess if people ask about your other interviews, more or less, they
have some interests in you. Lastly, he introduced a basic science researcher
for me to see the next day.

The interview with the chair was short. First, we talked about similar
research I did in China with their current microarray P450 genomics project.
Then, he asked about my Ph.D. research.

The last interview with the faculty is interesting. He is a child
psychiatrist. But he is also taking psychoanalysis himself. He asked about
my mentor in China; what he taught me? he asked about what is my hobby? Also
he asked how I feel when attending the psychiatry grand rounds. We talked
how well I was liked by the students I taught in China. But I felt I did not
answer some of the questions well due to limitation of vocabulary.

In the bonus day, I attended a group therapy with some addiction patients.
Very interesting. Then I also attended C/L rounds with a senior resident,
watching her how to make an overdosed patient to be transferred to psy-unit
voluntarily.

Rochester is a neat and tidy town. Around 40% of the population is related
with Mayo Clinic, while about 50% of population is with IBM. So the school
district is very good. Living cost is not very expensive.

In all, this is a very good program with big name. However, when I looked
back, I can not recall anything unique about it except the nice facility of
the downtown facility. I remembered about the three shields is about clinic,
education and research. Maybe because it was my first IV.

One last impression: they went to dinner in the interview day. The food in
that restaurant was really delicious.
