with one of the top cardiac transplant centers in the country. It also is
among the top-rated hospitals for lung transplants, bone marrow transplants
and kidney transplants. Transplant patients and their families are provided
with state-of-the-art evaluation and treatment services.

Heart Transplant Program
The Heart Transplant program at Brigham and Women’s Hospital is the oldest
and largest in New England, with more than 500 heart transplants performed
since 1984. In addition to performing the first heart transplant in New
England, Brigham and Women’s Hospital Cardiac Surgery division also
performed the first heart lung transplant in Massachusetts. Expert,
multidisciplinary care is provided in patient screening, pre-operative
monitoring, donor procurement, immediate postoperative care and
Lung Transplant Program
The Lung Transplant program at Brigham and Women’s Hospital continues the
tradition of excellence in organ transplantation at the hospital.
Established in 1990, the Brigham and Women’s Hospital Lung Transplant Team
performed both the first adult lung transplant in Massachusetts and the
first double lung transplant in New England. Comprehensive care is provided
to patients and their families both prior to and after lung transplantation.
Kidney/Pancreas Transplant Program
The Kidney Transplant Program at Brigham and Women’s Hospital is one of the
oldest established renal programs in the country. The first identical twin
kidney transplant was performed here in 1954 by Dr. Joseph Murray, who was
later awarded the Nobel Science Prize for his pioneering work with
immunosuppresents. Pre and post kidney transplant care is provided by a
multidisciplinary team of specialists. Currently, approximately 50 kidney
transplants are performed at Brigham and Women’s Hospital each year.
Bone Marrow Transplant Program
The Dana Farber/Brigham and Women’s Cancer Care Bone Marrow Transplant
Program is a joint effort between Dana Farber Cancer Center and Brigham and
Women’s Hospital. It was one of the first Bone Marrow Transplant Centers in
the world and is now one of the largest and busiest bone marrow transplant
programs in the country, performing over 300 bone marrow transplants per
year. All types of blood stem cell and marrow grafting are performed —
including matched and mismatched transplants from family members or
unrelated donors, cord blood transplants, autologous transplants and
identical twin transplantation.
The program also provides complete bone marrow transplantation services for
patients with non-malignant diseases.
