come a little late but hope it can be helpful to others ...
>10 yrs graduate, 2 month OB/no other clinical experience, US PhD, GC, 90s/
90s/cs all first attempt, 8 IVs, pre-ed.
1. make up ur mind:
Once u do, dont look back. This maybe the most important steps. Takes the
longest time for me. Thought over it carefully and make up my mind in 2006;
2. creat a good enviorment:
I didnt quit job as I fear too much pressure. Changed job and found a boss
who would judge ur work by what u actually acheive, not the time u spend in
lab ( I am very lucky). Also found some CMGs to study together .. thank them
3. make plan:
Usually study 2-3 hr daytime b/w works, 3 hrs at night. 4-5 hrs weekend. I
like to study in hour-long block, can never do long 3-4 hrs session ---
works best for me and can keep my job .... Dont over-work uself to
exhausting at the beginning, u need the last push at the end ....
4. Step 1 is the most difficult;
Take me 3-4 months to feel I was making progress. Another 2 month before
step 1 was the most stressful. Only did Kaplan Qbank, 50s %. My strongest
suggestions is to go through NBME CAREFULLY, it is the best study materials.
After I did form, I felt I knew what they are asking. Went through every Qs
of NBME and know what they are asking.
5.Day of test:
Ur attitude and physical condition is very very important. Get to attack
each Q, get to focus no matter how tired u r at the end, get to keep on
going with positive attitude even u dont know the last 20 Qs. What I did was
: sleep a lot a week ahead, not just a day before; Dont eat too much in
break; take break after every block; no study the day before. I believe u
can score much higher than ur NBME is u r \"in the zone\";
6. Practice, practice, pratice CS:
Practice for more than 2 months on CS with a group of friends, discuss with
each other, make suggestions ... pay attention to everything, the way u walk
, how to look at patients, how far to stand from patients et al .... I once
thought I was over-practicing, but after exam I knew I was not ... it is not
a easy test for us, even if ur speaking england is good, u have to practice
a lot. Fail CS is the WORST ...
7. Step 2 in 3 months:
Use kaplan note and UW only, low % till exam. Again, found NBME the most
helpful (tho score low in all forms)
Knock on the doors of physicians with no connection at all, get one with
good LOR ---- dont be afraid of being rejected, ask, ask and ask, u will
meet one nice guy evenually, and that\'s all u need ...
ASAP, I applied late ...Pay attention to other factor, PS, ur photo, check
every letter in ur CV and responding email, OB, LOR ... You r not a beauty
if only ur nose if pretty ...
Be youself, be honest, relax and have a good time ... know what u say, mean
what u say, dont pretend to be someone else. To me, it is more a personality
test, which is very hard to fake ...
11. Take step 3 if u can
I didnt but I can tell it helps a lot in getting IVs.
It is a very busy and hard one-year, but I enjoyed it very much, I did
something that is hard, which I was not sure I can do, and at the end I made
it ... it is very rewarding by itself ... and my experiments all worked
great and I am writting two papers now ...
Thanks a lot for ppl here, 老刀, jimmy ... got a lot of good advices from
Good luck to everyone!
my timeline is Jan step 1, May CS, Aug step 2, application completed Oct (
ecfmg certified) --- I was late in application .... I did all application
while waiting for result of CK in Sep, but w/o ECFMG certificate I think it
is considered incompleted application ....
I practiced with 2-3 ppl, I think practice with as many different ppl as
possible is the best ...
you should go for it, even if a little late, there are still opportunities,
and it is a great experience ...
