i have always hoped there'd be more chinese physicians, especially in
subspecialties and such, looking around, you can see those from india and
pakistan forming their own little circles and wonder when we chinese could
do that,

seems many have matched successfully this year, maybe that day is getting
closer,

first of all kudos to guidewire, or anybody going through surgical residency
, it's tough, not something that i could go through,

for myself, a borerline burnout with questionable social skills and even
more questionable medical skills, sitting by self late at night when demons
come, i wonder if i've picked the right career,

but from guidewire's example, maybe there are things i still remember about
residency that could be of help, for people here going into internal
mediciine/fp programs in the coming year,

maybe not exactly 10 things and not in any particular order,

1. don't trust anybody,
but yourself, not trying to be synical, but things will only be done if you
do it yourself,

2. document everything,
whenever you write something into the chart, write down the date and time,
especially important for legal protection

3. drink enough water,
whenever your pager go off, drink some water, especially oncall at night,
got to hydrate your own kidneys first

4. watch for your own safety,
most programs especially those univeristy programs located in downtown, when
you leave at late night; or when you driving home after taking all night
calls, drive carefully

5. don't ignore your family/other things that are important in life
self-explanatory

6. when you have a chance, go to those drug rep dinners, mostly in fancy
places, i couldn't even afford those on my current salary,

7. most procedures are like watch one, do one and teach one, just be careful
not to stick yourself with needles, all the horror stories there are, i
stuck myself twice placing lines,

8. be nice to people from nurses to techs to janitor to clerks, but remember
if you always sit by the foot of the hill then the shit will keep flowing
down to you,

9. now you really have a MD degree behind your name, congratulations that
you are officially becoming a target for those blood sucking lawyers for
malpractice lawsuits, two of my interns got sued,

10. relax, they will not easily kick people out of any program, they need
you as much as you need them, if not more, so unless you screw up big time
nobody will kick you off the program,
