I think it is the best time for me to share my story with you guys.
Last year, I had the exact feelings you are having now. Then, I did not
know the website and experienced my worst time alone. This year, I hope that
I could go through the hard time with all you guys and you could get
something from my story that could sooth you and encourage you. Then you
will shake off the frustration and find your strength to move on.
After getting the bad news, I had never had such feelings before, even
though I had experienced failures before. Such feelings were a mixture of
frustration, hopelessness, helplessness, hatred, desperation, shame and
regret. In all, I felt dead and did not eat for one day.
After scramble, life had to move on. First, I got advices from my classmates
, friends and USMLEFORUM. COM. Here I also want to thank all those who ever
helped me and encouraged me. Then, I went over what weakness I had and what
I did not do right. From there, I started to work on my weakness. I spent
half time on observation while I kept my part-time job. I had planned to
quit but I could not because of personal reason. I got several positive
references from observation. Most physicians are very nice and would like to
help us if we ask. I also finished step 3 in July.
From the very beginning of Sept, I applied over 200 programs (several
specialties). This time, I got 18 IVs and matched.
From my experience, I summarize some important experiences while I pursue my
Programs see you as a whole package. You do not need to be very good at
everything but you should not have any weakness. If you have, strengthen it.
Just as we take steps, our score will be lowered if we are weak in some
subjects. For most of us, English is No. 1 issue. If so, start to work on it
from now. I hired a private English tutor and spent a lot of money on
English. Such investment is worthy from a long run. As long as we live here,
English always plays a critical role in our life no matter what we do.
Matching is becoming harder and harder. Be prepared from the beginning. Get
your scores as high as you can. As you know, most CMG who get matched scored
more than 90s. That does not mean people with 80s do not have chance. But
definitely, it will be much harder. They could catch up if they have other
credits to put on.
“We always lose something when we get something”. Since you get the
certificate, I think it is better for you guys to move on, whatever. But
many people I know quit after first try. I feel sorry for them. Most of us
are doing research. It means that you can always find a research job even
though you quit one or two years. But you do not have the chance to get your
big dream into reality if you do not try your hard right now. If your
status allows you to quit your job, do not hesitate and make full use of
your time to do observations and finish step 3. Those will increase your
chance for sure. It is only a few months before next application.
Try to get your LOR as best as you can. The best references sometimes are
not from the famous guys but from the ones who know you more and you know
that he or she will write you an excellent one. If you are not hundred
percent sure, you can choose not to waive and read it before you send them
out. Sometimes, the references do not know what the programs or you need.
You can ask them to revise it to meet your need.
Regarding to PS, your PS is not ready until PD wants to offer you the job
after he reads your PS. Otherwise, keep working on it and start to work on
it earlier, which takes time. Put your insights, energy, enthusiasm, dreams
, efforts and strengths into it. After that, you can ask a professional
editor to revise it. But they do not put any thoughts in it. All ideas are
from you and they just polish it and make it like American.
Be confident no matter what failures you have experienced. It is very easy
for us to doubt ourselves after this. But who will have the confidence to
offer you the important job if you do not have confidence in yourself? Keep
your head up and smile even though our heart is bleeding. Where is the
confidence from? It is from you work on your weakness, your well-preparation
and your hardworking.
No pain, no gain. I wish all you make your American dreams come true.
By the way, I am sure that you are curious about my scores and background.
My step1/2 is low 90s and step 3 is 80. All are first attempt. I graduated
almost 15 years ago and worked as a physician in China for eight years and
as a postdoc in the USA for seven years with green card.
