Took CS in LA last week. Not feeling so good, and super worried of failing.
Still want to share my journey with everyone.
-Took Kaplan 5 days course, very helpful! It helped me identify my weakness
and strengthens. My stress level was way down when I found out that I only
failed ICE part on the MOCK exam. I did not prepare at all when I went to
take the course.
-Read FA and core cases for less than 3 weeks. so total less than 4 wks
preparation for CS. Just finished the first round of reading FA 2 days
before the exam date. Practice online with a partner 2-3hrs every day for
about a wk. Practiced on my kids (7, and 9 yo) and husband for 3 days before
the exam. Very panic due to lack of confidence.
Arrived in a hotel the day before, walked around and got familiar with the
area. The hotel is very close to the center and the airport, very
convenient. But the hotel is awful, dirty and no breakfast included (maybe i
am spoiled). Especially there were some creepy sounds in the middle of
night and freak me out. The good thing is 10 mins walk distance to the
center, and you can leave the luggage in the hotel, and come back to take
the shuttle to the airport after the exam. The day of my exam, only 2 IMGs,
everybody else were either 3rd year or 4th year american medical students,
young, and confident. To be honest, I did not want to do it that day, I felt
my stomach full of bugs... Did not do well in the morning, the last case I
did not even finish the PE before the time was out. The lunch was good,
sandwich, fruit and desert. The food and chat with a 3rd medical student who
is descended from Taiwan made me relaxed a bit. The afternoon sections
were better, I was able to finish all cases but forgot counseling in most
cases. Under the limited time, I forgot so much... In general, I felt the
PNs were easier than the encounters in the room. I don't feel difficult in
terms of DDX, every case were easy to diagnose. no confusion. All SPs were
supper nice to me, and poured all the info even I did not ask. When I gave a
wrong DDX during one closure, one SP even corrected me with additional info
that I failed to elicit from her. I should have prepared more and maybe I
could perform better, given the fact that I was so blessed with easy cases
and super nice SPs. Anyway, in just less than 4wks, I did my best. There is
no regret even I failed. But my suggestion is if you dont have time problem
, prepare well and get yourself familiar with all the minicases and big
cases in the FA, you will be fine.
The next 2 mos will be a hard waiting time. I will definitely keep posted on
the result. By now, I have finished step 1, ck, and cs in 16mos after
waiting for 3yrs of appeal. Feel the step 1 is the hardest, and ck and cs
are so much easier... I am saying that is because I did not aim that high.
Finish all exams within a limited time is my goal. I have family and kids.
Preparing the exam has taken a lot of time and efforts from me. I dont want
to put everything else on hold too long for this. Life is short, spend it on
the things you enjoy. Finally, the past 16mos has been the happinest time
of my life- being able to do things I really enjoyed. I was so blessed to be
able to take the exams. I hope those who were or are rejected from ECFMG
get your green lights soon. Hold on to your dreams if you think it is worth.
