I notice that quite a few people think comparing to other specialties,
Psychiatry is piece of cake. It can be readily used as back up.
Well, yes Psych is normally not as strict on YOG as IM (although getting
more & more strict nowadays), not research oriented as Path, but it does not
mean you will have more chances to get in psych with inadequate dedication
and
preparation.
Psych is a unique specialty, it requires higher standard for communication
capability, including verbal and cultural, with which you can only learn
from enough time of clinical exposure (observation/externship, etc). Psych
program is generally more concern about your integrity, your team work
skill and personality, and trust me, they can tell right away as they do
interview for a living.
So if you are not well determined and prepared, you are more than likely to
waste your money and effort to apply for psych just as a 'backup'. This
outdated strategy might work 5-10 years ago, but certainly not now.
With this being said, I will actually encourage you to apply for psych if
you really love
it. It's a lot fun, and with decent income and good life style. Psych job
market is also in high demand (which might change later, taking your years
of training into consideration, take the tough market for Pathology as an
example)
My final advice: choose what you really like, not just follow the flow.
good luck
