I know it it is a little \"out of topic\" in such an interview season, I am an
old CMG but new in the USMLE community, I would like to share my recent
exam experience with our CMGs, and hope it will be helpful.

Exam date:10/27/07
Report: 11/21/07 9:16AM (It was tooooooooooo.... loooooooooong to wait)

Step 1: 243/99
NBME I: 580 (4w b4)
NBME II: 680 (1w b4)

UW: 67% (60% at the beginning, 79% at the end, mixed/unused)

I felt so bad after the exam, and completely wasn\'t sure of my performance,
that was why it was so loooong and torturing during waiting.

The real exam is really really different from any of the Q banks (UW/ kaplan
)and no current resource can cover>90% of the test, it is just so flexible,
it stresses on the basic concepts(and your ability to apply these concepts)
of the most heavily tested topics, other than just the knowledges (I
encountered no wierd/rare topic that I have never seen during the real exam)
, you have heard of it, you are familiar with it, and you just have no idea
what they are talking about.

Before test, I felt I was so confident, and estimated that FA must have
covered >95% of the topics according my Q banks experience, but it didn\'t, I
would say ~80-85%. The difference is, FA is too skeletal, but boards love
concepts and flesh. Generally speaking, FA is good enough for biochem, micro
, and pharm, you can stick on FA for these subs, and forget about kaplan.
other parts of FA is also good, but it covers only about 85%.

I read a post from an indian guy in another forum, his exam experience is
almost exactly my feeling, expcet I finished each block with only 1-2 min
left. http://www.usmleforum.com/files/forum/2007/1/244236.php

However, the final score correlates with NBME and Q bank performance, so don
\'t get scared by what I have said, but be prepared, you will be paid back
from your investment.

Good luck to everybody & Happy Thanksgiving!

Glad to have somebody with identical scores with me. Yes, I was expecting
higher, but to be honest, my expectation fell to anywhere between 85-99
right after stepping out the prometric center(<85 is a liitle hard to accept
). Such a steep contrast comes from the poor mental preparation, NBMEs are
short, only one or two lines, I did it usually within 45min, even UW I have
5-8 min to check back. I read somewhere from the forum that the real exam
was between kaplan and UW, and closer to kaplan. However on the exam day, my
first 4 blocks were on average 4-5 lines, I barely saw 3 lines, and the
last two min reminder always freak me out since often time I still had 2
questions left to answer. In my mind, I was always expecting the next
question/block would be easier, but again and again, I was overwhelmed with
these lenthy questions.

I don't mean my test was tougher than orthers, but at least was unexpected
to me. I walked around to several other forums and regret I didn't read
those posts before taking mine, maybe it wouldn't make difference either in
terms of final score, but at least would be helpful to be more prepared and
lower down the anxious level during and after exam and focus on the step2
prep.

In the afternoon, the 5th block became nicer, pretty much like NBME, I had
10 min to review, and made some wrong corrections...hehe.. you know what, my
correction hit the right answer much better when I was doing UW (2:1), but
in the real exam, I would rather take some time to relax if I took it again.
I made another mistake after the 5th block,I didn't take a break, as
suggested in Q book, which I should have (this suggestion is actually for a
young graduate, not for me). I was expecting the next one would be as easy
as the 5th, and it turned out to be wrong, it was not as tough as the first
4 blocks, but I quickly ran out of energy in the middle of the 6th, and the
rest half block became painful and torturing, I even didn't care about right
or wrong, just want to finish it.

I had a break after 6th, only 5 min, simply because I forget to check how
much left after the 6th block, whatever, I came back. The 7th was tough
again, I don't remember how I went it through, but I probably made another
wrong correction in the last minute.

That was my exam, a bit talkative, but today is my day, I just have my score
, and is soooo willing to share....hahaha...

GXGX!

FA is good enough for biochem, micro but not pharm. The best material for
Pharm is Boards and wards for Pharm. My final results shows I am very bad at
Behavioral but excellent in other fields, I think maybe UW is good for
Behavioral because I did not do UW. Q-bank is absolutely weak in Behavioral.

Thanks for your input, I didn't know that and might be misleading, but I am
glad that you introduce us such a great resource.

Actually, there were not heck a lot biochems on the boards, which was
overstressed in UW, instead, it is molecular bio, and it is tough, I saw
something just has been published in Science in 2003 apeared on the boards,
when I was reading the question, the only sentence in my head was "this is
so mean!!!", but it might be a testing question...

I agree UW is better in Behavioral, I did so well in UW behavirol, and NBME,
but my performance on step1 Behav was just above average.
