Here are several factors you should take into account when choosing a
1. interest, this is the single most factor.
2. salary, important, but not everything.
3. life style, surgery is famous for terrible life style, one student from
baylor school of medicine told me ROAD( radiology, opthalmology,
anasthesiology, dermatology) is considered good life style and good payment.
4.competitiveness: for our foreign students,we have to be realistic, you can
check NRMP match data. competitiveness of a specialty for FMGs is reflected
by % of FMGs matched into this specialty. For a example, in 2007, highly
competitive programs for FMG are EM, dermatology, anesthesiology, surgery,
radiology ( more than 75% matched are US seniors), less competative programs
are internal medicine, PGY-1 surgery, FM, neurology, pathology( less than
50% matched are US seniors). The least competitive specialty is surgery
preliminary and FM( 38.1% and 42.1% are US seniors)
you can add more on the list!
