Here is the story of my two-year experience. I hope this may help all the
Chinese friends out there who are doing (or thinking about doing) the boards.
2000 Ph.D in Pathology
6 years research in USA (Regret level ++++... I should have done it two or
three years earlier. I didn't have all the necessary information or model
among my colleagues and friends. When I finally started to consider it
seriously, I didn't believe that I could do it. Indeed, I gave up twice
Published one paper in CNS
Took step 1 in March 2006 after 8 months full-time study at Kaplan video
course; got 230/93
Took step 2 CK in August 2006 (Also kaplan), got 231/93
Took Step 2 CS in September 2006, passed. (Regret Level ++++, I should have
done it after step1 since the result comes out really late: not until December.
It cost me in the number of interviews. Don't be afraid-- CS is easier than CK.)
Applied to 20 pathology programs in mid-Sept around New York area, and got
one call from Yale
Added another 30 pathology programs along East Coast and Mid-West, got
another 3 calls: U Mass, Indiana, U Miami (Regret level++++, I should have
applied to all of them in the first week of Sept. It is not the time to save
money. You need to apply to as many as possible and in the furthest distance
you can handle.)
Registered at NRMP (I can't believe that I didn't know ECFMG is different
from NRMP. When I realized that we need to register at NRMP, it was already
past the deadline. So I wasted $50.)
Made a rank list--- certified it to green--- That is ALL
Very exciting and nervous three weeks... waiting, worrying, hoping...
Matched to pathology at U Mass!
I did it! First time in my life, I accomplished something which seemed
totally impossible. It feels like taking a train through the lognest tunnel
in the mountain, darkness after darkness, and deeper darkness. Finally, you
reach the end and arrive in the sunshine! You have traveled thousands of miles.
You can do it, trust me!
