I just came back from my fellowship interview.
This is a top 3 program in my field. The interviewers all told me that "our
program is the best, maybe Harvard is equally good but I still think ours
are the best"
I met with 5 faculties, each lasts around 1 hour. Surprisingly, the
interview is very relaxing, some typical interview questions, but no tough questions.
All of them try to find out what I want to do after fellowship? practice or
research? I told them that I like research, I prefer in the future 50:50.
They clearly told me that it's impossible, no way in between, and I have to
choose either way and it's better for me to start thinking right now.
I realized they are looking for candidates with strong motivation of
research and that's the main reason that I was picked as a candidates.
Fellowship application is relatively easier compare to residency, however,
for the top programs, it is still competitive. The program I went for
interview hasn't had any FMG in 10 years. All the current fellows are either
from it's own program or from Harvard, Hopkins, Stanford those Ivy League
I know I should say "I want to be a physician scientist in the future". But
for many CMGs, like me, we come a long way to be back on clinical track, if
back as a pure physician scientist, what's the point of suffering so much as
a resident now and fellows in the future?
