Do not have a whole lot experience to share with you guys because it was my first interview. Everything was easy and nice, and no hard questions at all.
Both two interviewers kept asking me “do you have any/ any other questions for me” and unfortunately I didn’t prepare a long list and I ran out of ' good questions’ pretty quick. Including the morning report, the hospital tour, talks with two attendings and a noon conference, the interview was finished at 1pm. Four interviewees of that day were me, an Indian girl, two Americans (one of them was for prelim).
I wrote a thank you letter after the interview, emphasizing my interest in
the program and asking about prematch. The second day I got a call from PD who decided to offer me a prematch position.
I don’t have a great credential: 90s/80s/first attempt/80s, years of
graduation > 10 years, H1 needed. Feel so lucky to get this far, and of
course I got a lot of helps from people I know and don’t know all the way
along, otherwise I wouldn’t have the chance to write this post anyway. Hope my experience would bring hope, encouragement or even inspiration to some of you. A few things I want to mention:
I was in their waiting list and wasn't scheduled until a cancellation
came up. I was notified 4 days before the exact date of interview. So I wasn’t in their A list originally, but looks like once you get to the point of
interview, scores are not a big concern any more. At any rate, if you are
given the chance to show them who you are, bring up your very best and you will stand out.
If I have to give a list of things that help me get prematched in the
order of importance, the top item in my case is connection. Both the
interviewers know and personally know one of the physicians who wrote
letters for me. Both of them mentioned him during the interview.
Practice well. The practice helps me to reflect my goal, purpose, and
myself. In addition, it builds up confidence, once you put together all the
material of a good presentation, you know you are going to impress the
interviewers with genuine ideas, real life stories and a true self.
Keep in faith and good luck to you all!
