7. University of Utah
After the traumatic issue with Delta, I flew to Utah this morning. Chief of
Hem/Onc division and program coordinator sent me email and called me that
they understood the situation and they rescheduled all the interviews. So my
interview started at 11:00am. I was grateful that I didn't lose anything
and actually I saved one night's hotel stay.
Again, I was surprised that they interview one candidate at a time. I had
first interview with program director, who is a young nice female doctor
graduated from MKSCC 13 yrs ago. She introduced the program and asked me
about my short term and long term career goal. She also compared Salt Lake
City and NYC. People in Salt lake city are much nicer, living is much more
comfortable, the view is gorgeous, with Rocky Moutain around. All year long
you can enjoy the mountains, the lakes, the trails, the out door activities(
skiing, skating, jogging, water skiing, mountain biking, swimming, etc) The
weather is mild, not too cold in winter(it's warmer than in NYC), not too
hot in summer. There are tons of National parks around, and of course the
Yellow Stone and Great Canyon. But she said she missed the museums and
broadway shows in NYC, so she usually visit NYC twice a year for these
things. Hematology is a traditional strong part of the program, solid tumor
basic research is also good, especially breast cancer. Head and neck still
need improving, but they are hiring new faculties now. Clinical trial and
translational trial is weaker, comparing to hematology and basic oncology
reaserach, but they are building a whole new building just for phase one
clinical trials, and they are hiring a lot of researchers on this part now,
so it's developping. The unique part of this program is that by default,
fellows do two year fellowship and get single board certificate for private
practice. If fellws have strong interests in staying in academics, after
being approved by mentoring committee, they can do the third year, and get
double board certificate. Usually in the third year, fellows will submit T32
grants to get fundings or K08 grants. It is getting hard to get grants, but
a lot of third years did succeed and start their careers by those grants.
There are 18 faculties in hematology and 12 faculties in oncology, the
program directr calls it a very small program, because in MKSCC, there are
60+ faculties.
University hospital get referrals from Idaho, Wyoming, part of Corolado,
Arizona, the whole Utah, Montana. So there are a lot of pathologies. A lot of
newly diagnosed cases. The hospital has a helicopter to transport pt from
far away. The whole hospital occupies huge spaces, with building for eye
center, children's hospital, neuroscience, basic research, clinic research,
and on top of the mountain are Huntsman cancer hospital and Huntsman cancer
institute, which are more like 4 star hotels than hospitals. There is a new
building being built up for phase one trial patients and oncology ICU, very
fancy facilities. Money are donated by the donation from Mr. Huntsman. Who
make those boxes holding eggs. I wonder if there will be rich Chinese who
can donate money for building hospitals in China in the future. I have seen
so many cancer centers or hospitals here were built by donation from rich
people here.
There are 25 beds for BMT which is a good size.
Fellows are not too busy, one second year fellow spent a lot of time
rennovating his home in his first year, and now he is selling his home,
because he got a nice private practice job by the time he finishes the
second year.
All the other interviewers asked the general questions, they are really
interested why I applied this program. I talked a little bit about the
religion with Chief, who is a Momenian, and his son is going to Hongkong to
preach Momen in a few days. I don't agree with their belief, but I admit
Momenians are really nice conservative people, always smile, don't touch
alcohol or tobacco, care about family.
The environment of Salt Lake City is gorgeous, I can't describe the beauty
of mountains, you have to see by yourself. There are good areas and bad
areas in the city, public school in the good areas are very good.
This is the second program that is good in everyway, clinic, research, job
opportunity, weather, environment, access to national parks, etc. The first
one is University of Colorado in Denver.
