I was trying to reply in the original thread but was not able too.
I think that this is an important question and I hope that no one is
discouraged by age in their application.
The following is my answers to some questions raised in the original thread:

I went back to my record and checked some facts. The age 53 was when she
finished the program. She
started at the age of 50. I apologize for the error, but I had no intention
to mislead anybody. Let me tell
you the story why this person was accepted into a residency program at the
age of 50. She was born in
1956 and entered medical university in 1977. I do not think that many of you
can even fathom the historic
background associated with this class of students who grew up in the midst
of cultural revolution. She did
very well after graduation and got her PhD later on. She was once named "Ten
outstanding youth of
Shanghai" one year for her achievements. She was already a full professor
and an associate director of a
research institute at a medical university in Shanghai when she left that
post 13 years ago for a "visiting
professor" (de facto postdoc, in medical genetics) position in the US. She
did not return to that prestige
position in Shanghai and stayed in the US for her son. Right or wrong, she
wanted her son to grow up and
get educated here.

Her position in US was changed into a "technical associate" to do the same
job in later years. A few years
ago, her boss the big-shot professor in medical genetics lost his NIH
funding and she lost her job stability.
She was doing part time jobs in several labs to make a living and took the
board at the mean time. We
worked at the same medical center and she approached me for a resident
position in the program I was in
charge. She had vast clinical experience in China and I thought that she
would do well clinically here. She
was a good researcher and had some nice publications, one in Nature Genetics
as first author. She was
humble and never complained about her underling positions. She was well
liked by those around her and
had glowing recommendation letters. And most importantly, she had the
courage and perseverance to take
the board and go for a residence program at an age many will start to
consider retirement. If we black out
the age, there was no reason for anybody to deny her a position in any
residence program. So she was in,
and sailed smoothly out. She is now practicing in the west coast and making
$200k plus. Her salary as a
technical associate was $35k. Her case might be an exception (but we do have
a 49yo Israeli graduate in
our program now), but for those of you who think that 5, 10 or 15 years
after graduation were some sort of
hard barrier and became discouraged, this story may hopefully clear it for
you. Many freshly graduated
applicants stand no chance of success in their applications because they do
not have the right life
experience, personality, mentality and professionalism to become a
successful doctor.

I used to be PD. But now PD works for me.

I enjoy the MITBBS site. I occasionally check in and browse through the
discussions. The "how old is too old"
title was quite eye catching and I followed the heated discussions. I
thought that it might be helpful to
post my thoughts and experience regarding the answer to this question. If
you think that my answer may
be misleading, just simply ignore it.

I am very busy. But It is getting better. For those who are struggling to
come up on top, I can assure you
that it will get better. You will find out that the higher you move up the
ladder, the better it gets because
there are more and more people work FOR you. And when you get older, you
need less sleep and you have
more time on your hand. It is after 1pm now and I am still here. I watched
the super bowl and I am glad the
Saints won!

I will be out of the country for a few weeks and this will be my last post.
