I think I am one of the luckiest one for this matching season. I graduated
from medical school that people may never heard about it and my major is a
small major. I do not have any previous clinical experiences . However, I
The experiences I got from this matching are try your best to the things you
can control like USMLE scores, observation, communication skills and letter
of reference. For the things you can not change, do extra work to
My advantages are:
1. God's blessing.
2. I had pretty decent scores. I read review books line by line and page by
page. It was very time consuming but it worked for me.
3. My English communication skills are above average (self-evaluation). It
helped me a lot during clinical observation and interviews.
4. I have a good personality (self-evaluation). It helped me to get the good
4. Research experiences and publications.
5. Strong family and financial support.
My disadvantages are:
1. No clinical experiences.
2. Graduated more than ten years.
3. Sometimes, has no confidence in myself
In a word, we all have advantages and disadvantages. You need to make an
overall good package to be matched.
My other experience is to find the opportunity and use it. For example, if
you feel your interview went very well, keep the communication with the
programs even though they may not reply. You can always tell how the
programs feel about you. Put more efforts on the programs you may get in. Do
not email them every day or week. It is annoying. Be active during the
interviews. Sometimes, the interviewers may ask the questions that you do
not want to answer but still keep your smile all the time and answer the
questions professionally. Communicate with other applicants and residents
during the interviews. It will give the program an impression that you are a
team player. Dress, behave and speak professionally.
Many people think "be yourself" is best during interviews. I think that is
for super-cows. For the general people like me, sometimes, I act like a
professional salesperson but the product is myself. I am not saying you have
to brag about yourself but you definitely can make your package more
shining. Meanwhile, convince the program your are a humble learner, team
player and hard worker.
During my interviews, I met some Chinese attending. They are all super nice.
Most CMG residents are also nice. On this board, I got many useful
information. This is the reason that I write this long post. These are all
my personal feelings. Hope it's helpful in some way. Again, my matching is a
miracle and the miracle do happen. May God bless each one of us.
