Today, I finally got my step 3 score with a "pass". I am done with USMLE now.
I applied for the step 3 in 03/08 dreaming that I could have it done in May
or June, before starting the residency. However, thing got out of control. I
did not study much and I had to postpone the test to August.
One thing I did not do at the beginning was to register with Prometrics. I
was working full time before May. Then I was buying, selling house and
moving to a new place. Once I realized the test was coming, it was middle of
June already. I looked around and then found it was so hard to schedule the
exam because no two consecutive days available any more in the nearby test
centers. I ended up taking the test in a city 150 miles away.
Then it is July, the first month of residency. I began to study. Since I had
clinic experience here, I did not read any books (even though I bought the
Crush Step 3 book) but just did the UW bank with a correction rate in upper
50s. I was worried but had not much time to do any rescue mission. Then I
did the NBME assessment test and got 660 around mid/late July. I thought I
would pass it for sure with this score. Thus, I did not study any more but
invested all my time in my residency.
I had the test on Aug 1-2 after got the permission to leave the rotation I
was on. After the first day, I thought I would fail for sure. I could barely
finish each block on time. I wasn't sure for almost 80-90% of the questions.
It appeared so different from my experience of Step 1 and 2. In the past I
could easily finish a block with 10-15 minutes left. After a long day, I
went back to the inn. My wife asked me how I felt. I told her that my chance
The following day I had more torture. Especially the CSS (I only spend one-two nights preparing the CSS.), among the nine cases, none of them were weird or complicated. However, I had a postmenopausal lady with vaginal bleeding. I did endometrial sampling, showing hyperdisplasia. I did CT and US, all indicated irregular endometrium thickening. Other regular labs done but no significant findings. I did gyn consult, but got "no recommendation at this point. Please manage your patient accordingly. " Then the computer prompted me that the patient had worsening bleeding, was getting worse. I proposed to do a D&C out of desperation, but the computer replied "the family and patient declined it." At
that point the computer gave me the 5-minutes warning. I end up with ordering a pending hysterectomy order. I was traumatized by this case.
In the following 3 weeks, I frequently checked the website to see if the
score was up. I strongly doubted that I would pass the exam. Actually I was
thinking to spend another 600 dollars again at the end of this year to
retake it. In the meantime, I was thinking what I should say to my program
if I did flunked it.
Thank god, tonight, I finally saw the score report was up. I opened the
link with a pounding heart. I was astonished to find that not only I passed
it, but also got a 99!
Gee, so much for the worry.
Now I am done with the USMLE.
