面试时一位内科PROGRAM DIRECTOR问了这样一个很不客气,甚至带有敌意按鬼子们的
话有OFFENSIVE味道的问题:

“Many people with too much research background tend to be lamb at clinical work?
HOW DO YOU THINK?”

I got this kind of q before when I was applying for residency. To be honest,
it was very offensive to me. Any person who dares to ask this question is
a total dumb and you should educate these guys.

What I did was to tell them that research itself does not make you a bad
clinician pre se and should not be treated as if doing research is liability
for an applicant.

(In fact, this BS about research makes a bad clinician is totally wrong
(Ask
him to tell his Chair the same thing. It is how much you split between
research and clinic work that makes the difference. For diplomatic
correctness of course I did not confront him).

I told them that in my true oppinion, research training helps me in everyday
clinica work: being organized, ability to look up for any information,
ability to follow protocol faithfully, and ability to communicate
effectively with my colleagues verbally and in written form. Let alone I
am the one who truly understand the cutting edge biomedical research, which
is changing the way clinicians practice medicine on a daily basis.

(BTW, during grand rounds, I can always ask insightful questions, which
makes the program look good to have sb who actually understand the cutting-
edge research work. (many US trained as well as Indian M.D.s do NOT know
a shit about bench work, sorry for them).

In addition, I told them that I have been successful in everything I did,
up to this point if I want to do it well (I did not have any clinical
experience to brag about). There is no reaseon that I can not do well in
residency. For guys who did residency in China, you can teach the how many
patients you see everyday in China.

Also I told them, I am here to be TRAINED to be a good clinician and I have
all the material to be trainable: hardworking, motivated, responsible, and
fast learner.

Anyway, for this kind of offensive question, do not lose your coolness, but
you should be firm to defend yourself and teach those who truely look down
on researchers a lesson (sorry fo them, they are not going to be a Chair
in their life time).
