Accomodation provided? No.
Dinner with Program director and associate program directors on the night
before, along with some fellows was very nice, in a good Chinese restaurant.
This program is very unique. First, its faculties and fellows are very very
young. The associate program director is only 30, and the director is 37.
Fellows are even younger, they look like kids. And there are a lot of junior
faculties. Last September, the chief of department hired 10 new faculties.
The Shands cancer hospital is brand new, just opened last November, with 290
beds, all in private rooms.
The program is well organized, with four tracks of fellowship training.
First track: Translational scientist: 18 months’ of protected basic
research, only eligible for single board at the end of third year. Graduates
of this track will be physician scientists.
Second track: Translational clinician: 6 months’ of clinical research,
eligible for double boards. Graduates from this track will stay in academic
area.
Third track: Clinical educator: No research requirement, but need to learn
how to teach and how to be administrators.
Fourth track: Clinical provider: Pure clinical training, graduates will go
to private practice.
A lot of graduates stay in the same hospital to become junior faculty or go
on to practice, till now, none chose the first track.
Well organized conferences and didactics.
A brand new building for basic research, but fellows don’t know what’s
going on inside. We were taken to the visit the labs, I saw a lot of Chinese
, supposedly technicians or postdocs. I was interviewed by one of the
professors who owned a lab in this research building, and was told that till
now there is no fellow who has carried out a project in his lab. All he has
are a bunch of postdocs and PhDs.
There are a lot of bread and butter clinical trainings for fellows,
especially during the VA rotation, fellows have 100% authority. After
graduation, everybody is very comfortable to practice in community.
Medical notes and orders are still hand written, but will be changed to
electronic notes soon.
Research: Hematology is well developed and very strong. Solid tumor is being
developped, Chief of department is still hiring more and more investigators
. But still, there are very good faculties for breast cancer, GI, Thoracic
and lung cancers. Shands cancer center is not NCI designated yet, but in the
future will be combined with Moffitt. Facilities for research are fancy and
abundant. Funding is OK.
Call schedule is the sweetest among all the programs I have interviewed. 6
weekends during the first year, 2 after duty call each month. Fellows do a
lot of moonlighting, and they gave the rate, 50/hour or 400/night.
No inpatient rotations.
Gainesville is a college town in forest. The huge university is in the
middle, and some restaurants ans houses scattered around. The patients
usually drive 2 hours to see doctors here from southern Georgia and northern
Florida. Alligators everywhere in the puddle, they follow people but seldom
attack. 2 hours drive to Jacksonville, Tempar and orlandor.
Public schools are good. There is on-site day care. Many female fellows have
two to three babies during fellowship. There is one pregnant first year,
one second year just gave birth, and the associate director is pregnant with
her third boy.
Living expense is low, everybody owns or builds houses. One second year
fellow had her 4-bedroom, 3 bathroom house built when she was an intern
during her residency.
The program takes many internal candidates.
All in all, fellows are happy, faculties are happy. Most of them are
clinicians. Everything is new, everybody is young.
