Postdoctoral Research Associate in Super-Resolution Inelastic Neutron
Scattering

Purpose
The Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (
ORNL) operates the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), the United States'
highest flux reactor based neutron source, and the Spallation Neutron Source
(SNS), the world's most intense pulsed accelerator based neutron source.
Together these facilities operate 30 instruments for neutron scattering
research, each year carrying out in excess of 1,000 experiments in the
physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical sciences for more than
3,000 visiting scientists. HFIR also provides unique facilities for isotope
production and neutron irradiation. To learn more about Neutron Sciences at

The Neutron Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL)
invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate with strong
experience and expertise in either scattering sciences, or super-resolution
imagery algorithm developments. This project is a collaboration between the
Neutron Data Analysis and Visualization Division (NDAV) and the Computer
Science and Mathematics Division (CSMD) at ORNL, and it benefits from
interactions with the instrument teams in the Neutron Science Directorate (
NScD). The project goal is to improve capabilities for the inelastic Time-of
-Flight neutron instrument suite at SNS through computing.

Major Duties/Responsibilities Developing Super-resolution Inelastic Neutron
Scattering (SR-INS) by applying super-resolution imagery techniques to 4-D
single crystal datasets and 2-D powder datasets measured at the direct
geometry neutron chopper spectrometers at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS
). We are seeking self-starters, willing to develop expertise in neutron
data analysis,
computational imagery, statistical analysis, and optimization techniques.
The position is integrated in an interdisciplinary research team between
NDAV, CSMD, and QCMD with expertise in inelastic neutron scattering, Monte-
Carlo neutron ray-tracing simulations, statistical modeling, optimization,
high-performance computing, and development of data reduction and analysis
techniques. Duties also include algorithm developments, scientific data
analysis, INS neutron experiments, publishing results, and developing
software.

Responsibilities will include:
* Develop computing tools to apply super-resolution imagery algorithms to
inelastic neutron scattering datasets measured at direct geometry neutron
chopper spectrometers
* Perform neutron scattering experiments and analyze data taking advantage
of the SR-INS techniques
* Responsible for presenting and reporting research results and publishing
scientific results in peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner
* Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program
requirements
* Maintain strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of
values and ethics

Qualifications Required
Basic Qualifications:
* A PhD completed within the last 5 years in physics, applied physics,
applied math, material science, chemistry, or other relevant fields from an
accredited institution.
* An excellent record of productive and creative research demonstrated by
publications in peer-reviewed journals
* Desire to learn and adopt new tools and technologies
* Candidates should be self-motivated, have good interpersonal,
communication and presentation skills and a demonstrated ability to interact
effectively with colleagues at all levels. The ability to work as a member
of a multi-disciplinary team is a critical asset.
* Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to
communicate in English to an international scientific audience
* Motivated and safety conscious
* Ability to set priorities, multi-task and adapt to ever changing needs
with the proven ability to function well in a fast-paced environment
* Ability to work with a measure of autonomy and a willingness to
participate creatively in a collaborative team environment
* Ability to work on multiple tasks in a limited amount of time and to
independently set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks to meet deadlines

Additional Information:
Applicants must have received their degree within five years of the date of
application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their
appointment. Certain exceptions may be considered. Appointments will
initially be for 24 months with a possibility of an extension of up to 12
months depending on funding and performance.

Preferred Qualifications:
* Expertise in analysis of scattering data and/or imagery data
* Experience with direct geometry neutron chopper spectrometers
* Experience with super-resolution imagery algorithm development
* Scientific computing skills such as statistical modeling, optimization,
and/or DFT simulations
* Knowledge and experience in one or more programming languages such as:
Python, C++, C, Fortran, MatLab, and Unix/Shell
