What's the difference between the two characters? I saw lots of both on the
covers of the Japanese Buddhism literature in the library.

Is the "仏" a Japanese simplified character, or, another different one,
probably to simulate the sound better?

那是日本简化字。
去书店找本字典看看吧

这个简化字当年要是没刹车，佛就变仏了。呵呵。
