Recently, I did a google search on tire balance since I was having quite
some troubles to have it done correctly for my dearest lude. I came across
all kinds of links and found one very interesting story that I wanna share
with all my friends. You can check out the original thread from the link
below or listen to my brief description.

Basically, a guy who has a new Kia Rio had problems on balancing the small
tires. After the first 5000 miles balance and rotation, he or she (assuming
he for now. :P) noticed unbalanced tire causing vibrations on highway. Since
Kia has such a good 10 years warranty, he went back to the dealer after he
tried to balance it in many different locations with no luck and even a set
of new tires. The dealer couldn't figure out the problem either. No matter
1g accuracy, tire run-out check or even several more sets of new tires, the
vibration still survived. Eventually, the whole front suspension was re-done
with new cv axle, lower arm, bushing, etc. But the vibration as if it was
unbalanced tires was so stubborn and persisted. It seems the problem is not
unique for this poor guy. Many new Rios suffer similar problems.

The final result of the story is happy although the owner bothered too much
in the past several months. He got the balance problem solved by using
"EQUAL". It is not the sugar replacement product, but a tire balancing
solution from IMI. Instead of attaching fixed lead balancing weights to the
rim, "EQUAL" balances the tire dynamically on the road. It consists many
small polymer particles, which are injected or placed inside the tire. On
the road, while tires are rotating at highspeed, "EQUAL" particles are
thrown out along the circumference and behave like balance weights to
dynamically compensate the uneven weight distribution of the wheel. It also
acts like a small vibration damper to further reduce uneven road vibration.
For more details, visit its manufacturer's webpage.

The good thing about "EQUAL" is that it automatically balances tires on the
run. It is a lifetime dynamic balance in the tire. You only need to do it
once and forget about the regular 2 times per year tire balance maintenance.
Traditional lead weights are static placements on the rim. They can't
compensate tire tread worn. That is why a regular rebalancing procedure is
required to avoid tire vibrations and uneven tread wear. Of course, it is
not an elegent solution as "EQUAL", which guarantees a balanced wheel
throughout the life of the tire at any time. As a result, "EQUAL" provides a
smoother ride and a longer tire life (10-20%) with less hassle. Another
advantage of "EQUAL" is to those off-road people. When there are mud and
dirt on the tires, the traditional static lead weights will fail to balance
the tire. But "EQUAL" is fine to adjust to the new condition on the fly.
Moreover, "EQUAL" makes those lead weights unnecessary. It will make the
wheel look more beautiful and appealling, especially for super large tires
like in SUV or Jeep. Lastly, "EQUAL" is nontoxical and friendly to the
environment. Every year there are tons of lead balancing weights falling off
on highway and pollute the surrounding area. Check the organization link
below.

Unfortunately, the good stuff of "EQUAL" is not popular among passenger
cars. It is often seen in 18 wheelers which require the tire to run trouble-
free for more than 100k miles. I just don't know why it can't get to the
main stream market to bring the good things to all the people. "EQUAL" is
pretty cheap and maybe even cheaper than traditional lead balancing weights.
A 10 oz bag I bought costs only $9.85+tax. It is enough for all 4 tires of
my lude (2.5 oz for 13" tire). A special valve core is required to prevent
clog and leak and is free with "EQUAL" purchase. I got the extra 3 free from
the seller. Installation is simple. I did it for 20 mins each tire with 90%
of the effort in refilling the empty tire with my hand pump. :P I will have
a new post talking about the easy installation process in detail.

I couldn't wait to test drive my new lude with the balancing problem all
solved. It indeed was an amazing drive on highway with virtually no
vibration at any speed. Only occassionally, there were some light
vibrations, which was most likely the problem of a loose front bushing on my
lude. I know it for quite long and may not wanna bother it any more since
the ride is pretty acceptable to me now. :)

"EQUAL" has some limitations too. Since it requires small particles inside
the tire to do the balancing job, it won't work with tires having glues (fix-
a-flat crap leak repair can) or grease (some run flat tires have similar
grease package) inside. Excess of water/moisture inside the tire may cause
polymer particles to float and fail to balance the tire. But it will be gone
after water evaporates fromt the tire. So keep the tire with "EQUAL" mounted
dry and pump dry air if possible. Check IMI's website for more details about
the application considerations about "EQUAL".

Will you like to try out the magic of "EQUAL" for a smooth, pleasant and
environmentally friendly ride? Go ahead and give it a try. I will post my
long term experience here when I had a conclusion to it. :)
