I am in the process for a home loan right now. This is what I did:
1) get a local yellow page for chinese (Dallas area);
2) pick 4-5 loan agents;
3) email or call to get a good faith estimate (you need tell them value of
your house, how much is the loan, 30 years or 15 years loan, estimate of
your credit score, etc). ask questions such as What documents are needed for
locking the rate, can you relock it, is there penalty for paying off the
loan early, etc.
4) compare the rate and fees;
5) pick a couple, and stop by the office to talk with the agent. usually
they can give your a little bit better rate if you meet him/her in person.
I stopped two offices. The second one provided me with 4.5% no point for 30
years fixed. I locked the rate and submitted my application that night,
since I bring with me all needed documents (two month bank statement,
passport, etc)
Hope it helps.
