I've said a lot about the speech already, but the media have lost sight of
what it was meant to do. Of course this was a brilliant speech on race in
America, and I'm glad it was, but the point of the speech was another: let's
not take the country for a ride and pretend that a good speech on race got
the job done with regards to Rev. Right. Obama muddled the message here, but
that won't take him far.
Even Halperin, who loved the speech, caught the lie (and it was a lie, no
parsing on this):
And/but ambiguity with this: “Did I ever hear him make remarks that
could be considered controversial while I sat in church? Yes.”
This is the real story; it does not matter whether Obama was there during
the sermons we've all heard now (though it will matter if he lied about that
, too); what matters is that Obama chose to stay in that church and, again
today, chose to defend Rev. Wright.
That is the point; the rest is noise.
