Subject: Helping China's rural education

This is Ma Weiji, i am writing to you on behalf of the Rural China
Education Program, a group of overseas Chinese students who send
volunteers to rural China to improve education and development.

Our first round recruitment for volunteers is targeted at CSSA
members. CSSA New Year parties are a good opportunity for reaching
them. We are wondering if you can spend 5~10 minutes at your party
letting your member know about the program. We have a short
presentation material (5 page PowerPoint slides - 135 kb) attached.

Our partner organization in China is DaXueShengZhiNong (大学生支农), a
non-governmental project that sends trained volunteers to poor rural
China regions to help with elementary education as well as rural
development. There are DaXueShengZhiNong
student societies in more than 100 universities in China. In winter
and summer break, college students from these universities spend 10~20
days in poor rural areas, teaching elementary and middle school
students. The areas of teaching run from math, English to drawing and
speech. Volunteers also spend time with farmers, bringing them more
information about policy and law as well as technological knowledge.
Please visit http://www.3nong.org for more information.

The aim of the Rural China Education Program is to raise awareness
about education and development in rural China and serve as a bridge
between international volunteers and
the DaXueShengZhiNong organization. We sincerely hope more people can help
with these kids and rural China by devoting 10~20 days of their time.
Together, we can make China better. Detailed information about our
project is at http://www.ruralchina.org .

I am attaching recruitment letters (in English and Chinese) which
provide more information and which you may send to your members.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have questions. I look
forward to your affirmative reply.

Best regards,
Wei Ji Ma

[email protected]。

<English Recruitment Letter>

VOLUNTEER TEACHING IN RURAL CHINA

Dear friends,

The Rural China Education Program offers outstanding Chinese-speaking
volunteers the opportunity to teach in rural China during the summer of 2005,
in a program which is locally coordinated and brings them as close as possible
to life in and the issues of China's countryside.
Every school vacation, a wonderful thing happens in China. Students from
hundreds of Chinese universities leave their comfortable lives in the city and
volunteer in poor areas in the countryside. They help villages develop social
and economic cooperatives, aimed at reviving community spirit and empowering
villagers, and teach local school children about the world outside their
villages. They organize social and cultural gatherings, creating personal
bonds with villages and planting seeds for a strong civil society in China.
These students give up weeks of their holiday time. They do not get paid and
often sacrifice their personal savings.  They have to endure poor
circumstances. But they know that what they do is important. It is important
to the villagers, who gain hope for a better future and the will to help
themselves attain it. It is important to the village children, who gain a
window to the outside world and the motivation to continue their own
education. And it is important to the volunteers themselves, who get a glimpse
of life beyond their familiar environments, and a chance to put their social
awareness into action.
These volunteers are part of a network called “Student Volunteers for Rural
Support” (Da Xue Sheng Zhi Nong Zhi Yuan Zhe).  Led by a renowned rural
development expert, Wen Tiejun, Student Volunteers for Rural Support (SVRS)
has grown to be a successful and respected independent volunteer movement in
China, and it has gained the endorsement of Prime Minister Wen Jiabao. In
2004, a group of motivated young Chinese established an international program
to help SVRS. This summer, volunteers from outside China will join Chinese
college students on their volunteer trips and provide a fresh perspective in
teaching rural schoolchildren.
You are invited to join us on a volunteer team during the upcoming summer
vacation (July or August 2005). If you are an overseas Chinese student, we
will introduce you to a team that matches your schedule and geographic
preferences and makes the most of special abilities. If you are not an
overseas Chinese student, we require basic knowledge of Mandarin, and will put
you through a careful selection procedure based on your expertise, knowledge
about China, and language skills. Either way, we will help you prepare your
lessons (for instance, basic science, arts, music, public speaking, or
English). Trip usually last between 10 and 20 days, in one location. Teams
consist of five to ten people. During the trip, you will receive help from the
other team members (Chinese students), some of whom have been trained in rural
development strategies.
Note that this is not a usual international volunteering program. The trips
are organized by Chinese student leaders. The teaching does not stand alone,
but is part of an integrated approach to strengthening communities. The main
asset of international volunteers is not their knowledge of English, but their
willingness to understand and connect to the local culture. You may live in
poor conditions or encounter many unanticipated situations. Please note that
you will have to pay for your own expenses. However, you will get a unique
opportunity to experience a side of China that is often overlooked, but is a
huge part of the reality of modern China. You will make friends with members
of the team as well as a meaningful contribution to China’s rural
development.
For more information, visit www.3nong.org (Chinese site) or
www.ruralchina.org. To apply, please email your  CV and a short statement of
motivation (100-200 words) to [email protected]; questions can also be
sent to this address. We hope to hear from many of you.

P.S. If you do not have time to volunteer, but still want to make a
contribution, you may consider making a donation to the Overseas Chinese
Education Foundation, www.ocef.org. They sponsor tuition expenses for Chinese
rural students in need.
