a solenoid is a relay+electric-actuator/clutch: it gets activated by
circuitry, which in turn a) closes a relay that supplies electricity to
your starter; and b) locks in the starter axis to the engine flywheel (most
likely through a metal pin).
your problem sounds like intermittent connection, which can be a) bad
ECU signals; b) a cold solder; and c) rusted out wires, and d) a short
along the line.
when it happens the next time, have someone else crank the engine, and you
moves the wires that go from the ignition system to the starter. If the car
starts when you are moving a particular terminal/wire, then that piece is
Short of that, you will have to pay a) lots for diagnostics and / or b)
the whole system -> a very expensive option.
