The reason is, you didn't press your gas pedal hard enough after
switch down gears. Then your engine pick up speed by slowing down
: violently. Well, passing at ~65, I just press gas pedal a little
I beleive for most cars, it is more efficient to accelerate at
4th gear UNDER THIS SPEED (~65m/h). At even higher speed, 5th
gear might be more practical and efficient, say at 90m/h.
: bit more, and no passing faster than that, for me.

I suppose the idea is, to accelerate fast one need to drive at
appropriate engine speed range, for most cars, it should be in
the range from 2500~3000rpm to 4500~5500rpm. So switch gears
fast will almost definitly gives bad acceleration.
To protect the engine, one should always avoid applying heavy
load on it while it is at low speed, say below 1500rpm. This
can explain why one need to switch down gears when climbing a
BTW, I noticed many people afraid of hearing the engine running
over 3000rpm. Well, the noise is different, but when you get
used to it, you will find it sounds much better then low rotation
